A meeting of Nigeria’s Police Service Commission (PSC) is on-going in the country’s capital Abuja.
“The meeting has only one issue on the agenda, and that is the selection of qualified and deserving police officers to be promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and constituted into the new Police Management Team,” a competent source told News Express.
“The marathon meeting started this morning and, at the end of it, the PSC will shortlist names of deserving police officers and send to President Goodluck Jonathan for approval,” the source added.
The meeting is being chaired by the Chairman of the PSC, Sir. Mike Mbama Okiro, with all the Commissioners in attendance.
“They are currently going through the files of senior officers with a view to shortlisting the new DIGs,” the source said.
News Express learnt that those being considered for promotion to the DIG rank include the following Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (IGP):
Solomon E. Arase (Edo State, South-South); Ballah Magaji Nasarawa (Kebbi State, North-West); Kawe Christopher Kagso (Taraba, North-West); Christopher Terhem Dega (Benue State, North-Central); Saliu Argungu Ashimu; Dan’azumi Jos Doma (Niger State, North-Central); Adisa Bolanta (Kwara State, North-Central); Mamman Ibrahim Tsafe (Zamfara State, North-West); Saliu Argungu Hashimu (Kebbi State, North-West); and David O. Omojola (Ekiti State, South-West).
Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Opara (Imo State), is scheduled to be given double promotion to DIG since to enable him qualify to join the Police Management Team, as he is the most senior police officer from the South-East and the law requires that every geo-political zone must be represented in the police management.
Those eventually selected will work with Mr. Suleiman Abba, Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) since July 31, to run the Nigeria Police following the retirement of erstwhile IGP Mohammed Abubakar and the mass retirement of DIGs in the wake of AIG Abba as the new police boss.
