Goals from Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud helped an Arsenal side containing new signings Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers sail past Manchester City this afternoon in the Community Shield clash at Wembley.
Things got off to a flying start when Samir Nasri’s strike struck Debuchy on the top of his arm in the penalty area, but referee Michael Oliver dismissed any suggestions of foul play.
Cazorla then opened the scoring for the Gunners in the 21st minute with a well-placed left-footed strike, beating new Citizens keeper Willy Caballero at the far post.
Yaya Sanogo kept the City defence busy with his pace and power, and the youngster set up Ramsey for Arsenal’s second after holding off Dedryck Boyata, with the Welshman smashing home Sanogo’s lay-off.
Arsene Wenger made a number of changes at half-time, bringing on Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Nacho Monreal, whilst Manuel Pellegrini hauled off Samir Nasri for talisman David Silva.
The Spaniard’s arrival almost had an instant impact when Stevan Jovetic headed past Wojciech Szczesny, but his effort rebounded against the post and the following shot went over the bar.
Giroud then scored the goal of the game with a looping 25-yarder, leaving Caballero rooted to the ground.
Fernando tried his luck from 20 yards out, but was unable to control his shot which zipped harmlessly wide.
The game quietened down as Arsenal kept their grip on proceedings, and the Gunners held on to secure their first piece of silverware for the season.
