Head of Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon MRC Maurice Kamto
The main opposition leader was arrested late Monday in Cameroon following two-day long anti-government protests against presidential election results, local media reported.
Maurice Kamto, the leader of Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC) party, was taken into custody from the house of Albert Dzongang, a party member, in the southwestern Doula city, local media said citing Emmanuel Simh, vice-president of the opposition party.
"We have serious concerns over the course of events and radicalization of the government,” Simh was quoted as saying.
President Paul Biya, 85, won seventh consecutive term with 71.28 percent of the votes in the Oct. 7 presidential polls.
Kamto, who ran for president in October’s election, came in second with 14.23 percent of the votes. The opposition leader still claims that he won the election.
Six people were injured in the anti-government protests upon the call of MRC party over the weekend. Some 117 others were detained. (Anadolu)
