A building located along Okagbue Agba Street in the commercial city of Onitsha was around 8pm on Friday gutted by fire.

The building which houses many shops it was gathered destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

Though no life was lost in the inferno, almost all the shops located upstairs were razed down.

While confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Mohammed, said the fire was put off by men of the Fire Service department with the assistance of local volunteers.

He said that apart from goods destroyed in the cause of the inferno, that no casualties were recorded.

Mohammed noted that the cause of the fire and value of property destroyed were yet unknown, assuring that investigation were on to determine the cause of the fire.

He said: “At about 8pm, there was a fire outbreak at a one-storey building (Ogbo Akwukwo plaza) along Okagbue Agba street Woliwo layout, Onitsha in Anambra State.

“Police Patrol team led by DPO CPS Onitsha, SP Iburu Ifeanyi, rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to prevent looters from taking advantage of the situation to loot.”
