Nigeria’s star weightlifter Chika Amalaha has been provisionally suspended from the on-going Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland for failing a drug test.
The 16-year-old last Friday opened Nigeria’s gold rush with a weightlifting gold with a combined total of 196kg in the women’s 53kg category.
However, news broke this afternoon that she has become the first athlete to fail a test at the Games.
Reports from Glasgow said Chika’s ‘A’ sample was found to contain amiloride and hydrochlorothiazide, which are both prohibited as diuretics and masking agents.
Amalaha has protested her innocence and will have a ‘B’ sample tested tomorrow.
She stands in danger of being stripped of her gold medal if drug use is confirmed by the second test.
Nigeria has so far won three gold medals at the Games – two from weightlifting and one from the 100 metres women’s race.
