Redemption Camp tragedy: How undergraduate, 21, butchered father (SAN) during prayer session

Details have emerged of how a 21-year-old undergraduate, Tolani Ajayi, killed his father, Mr. Charles Ajayi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), during a prayer session in their residence inside the popular Redemption Camp located on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident took place at about 4:00 p.m. last Tuesday, July 1.

Tolani, a 300-level student of the Department of History and International Relations at Redeemer’s University, Redemption Camp, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command and is in custody.

Tolani, according to Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, was arrested at about 5:30 p.m. the same day at his father’s house after the discovery of the corpse.

Adejobi in a statement issued yesterday in Abeokuta disclosed that Tolani was given away by his strange attitude while dumping the box containing his father’s corpse in a nearby bush, which prompted some RCCG residents who saw him to alert the police.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect earlier lied that his dad had gone on evangelism before he eventually confessed to the crime when he was taken to the Redemption Camp Divisional Headquarters. He stated further that the problem arose when his late father confronted him for not responding to all the prayer points he (the deceased) was calling and the late father slapped him. He said he went mad and went straight to the kitchen to pick up a knife to stab him and later a cutlass to cut his throat and killed him,” the police statement said.

It disclosed that exhibits, among them the knife and cutlass the suspect used in killing his father, had been recovered by the police and the corpse had been deposited at a morgue in Sagamu.
