Breaking: National Conference votes for rotational presidency

Delegates to the on-going National Conference in Abuja today voted that the country’s presidency should rotate between the northern and southern parts of the country.

The Conference took the decision while debating the report of its Committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government co-chaired by retired General Ike Nwachukwu and Hon. Umaru Kumaila. It did not, however, agree on which region should take the first shot.

The thinking of the Conference is that rotating the presidency between the North and South would help to reduce the fierce contest for the plum position and thus serve to reduce political tension in the country.

Nigeria used to be two countries known as Northern Protectorate and Southern Protectorate before both were merged by British colonialists in 1914 to create what became known as Nigeria.
