The full house at the Estadio Mineirao Belo in Horizonte, Brazil, erupted in celebration minutes ago as the country romped into the quarter-final of the 2014 World Cup being hosted by the country from June 12 to July 13.
Title favourites Brazil squared off against hard-fighting Chile in the tournament’s first second-round match, coming close to winning during regulation and extra time but a winner could not emerge until the penalty kicks.
Brazil had taken an early lead when David Luiz found the Chilean net in the 18th minute but Alexis Sánchez cancelled the advantage in the 32nd minute.
In the ensuing penalty shootouts, Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar turned out to be the hero of the day after he stopped two of the Chilean kicks to leave scores at 3-2 in favour of the hosts.
