Fall of the heavyweight: Champions Spain crash out of the World Cup (Spain 0 Chile 2)

For the first time in the history of the World Cup, a defending champion has lost two consecutive group matches. Spain, which set that record this evening at the Maracanã - Estádio Jornalista Mário FilhoRio De Janeiro, have consequently become one of the first of the 32 teams to crash out of the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

Against all expectations, the Spaniards, who conquered the world four years ago in South Africa, were outplayed and outscored 2-0 by underdogs Chile – thanks to spectacular strikes by Vargas (20th minute) and Aránguiz (43rd minute).

Having scandalously lost their match 1-5 to the Netherlands, Spain will now play their final Group B game against Australia as a mere formality.

The Netherlands had earlier in the evening out-struggled Australia 3-2, thus becoming the first team to qualify for the next round of the championship – now followed by Chile, while Australia and Spain are condemned to start packing their bags preparatory to leaving Brazil after the group games.
