Africa’s World Cup woes worsen as Algeria loses opening match 1-2 to Belgium

Africa’s fifth representative at the on-going Brazil 2014 World Cup, Algeria, this evening failed to lift the continent’s gloom arising from last night’s unexpected barren draw recorded by Nigeria against Iran and Ghana’s 1-2 loss to USA.

The Desert Warriors surrendered a 25th minute lead, losing 1-2 to Belgium after conceding two second half goals in their Group H opener at Belo Horizonte’s Estadio Mineirao.

With this result, Algeria joins Cameroon and Ghana in the losing league and in danger of early ouster alongside Nigeria, whose draw against Iran raises doubts about their fate against Argentina and Bosnia Herzegovina in her remaining group matches.

Ivory Coast is the only African side which has so far recorded a victory, defeating Japan 2-1 in Group C on Sunday in Recife.

Africa has yet to go beyond the quarter-final of the World Cup despite dominating the age grade competitions, thus exposing the failure to build on age grade success.
