Boko Haram insurgents
Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents yesterday invaded two villages in Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State, killing no fewer than 10 persons.
The attack brought to five the number of similar cases in Northern Borno zone where the Albarnawi faction of the terror group operates, in the last two weeks.
Details were still sketchy at reporting time, as security agencies did not issue any statement on the attack.
But local sources and top officials of the Civilian JTF and Borno State vigilante group told Daily Trust that the insurgents pounced on the two villages, Sheriwu-kwayari and Modu-Ajiri, close to each other, about 9 kilometres to Nganzai town, the headquarters of the local government on motorcycles.
“They were shooting residents sporadically,” an official of the Borno State Vigilante Association said, adding, “There was stampede as the residents scampered for safety at the outskirts.”
“I can confirm to you that our members and the CJTF carried away the corpses of six persons killed instantly while four who sustained serious injuries, died later,” he added.
Another source said when the residents most of whom are cattle rearers, fled leaving their livestock, the insurgents took them away.
He said searches were still going on for more possible casualties.
