Death toll shoots up in Jos bomb blasts

Twenty-eight more persons have been confirmed killed by the bomb blasts which rocked Jos, capital of Plateau State in North-Central Nigeria, this afternoon. This brings to 84 the number of corpses counted by a News Express Special Correspondent in Jos.

The latest 28 confirmed are at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). Fifty-two corpses (not 60 as earlier reported) were counted at the government-owned Plateau State Specialist Hospital while four were counted at the teaching hospital of the privately-owned Bingham University.

Our correspondent said it is believed that some corpses have also been deposited at dome private hospitals but there is no confirmation yet. Many people were left injured by the three bomb blasts and are receiving treatment in various hospitals in Jos.

The first blast occurred about 3pm at the second-hand shoes market between old JUTH and the railways. The bomb reportedly went off in a Siena space bus marked Plateau XB 146 BLD. It was soon followed by two other explosions in the vicinity.
