Manchester City reclaim English Premiership crown

The English Premiership trophy remains in Manchester but has once more been exchanged between two Manchester sides – from dethroned champions Manchester United to Manchester City, the side once derided by United as “noisy neighbours.”

As the curtain was this evening drawn on the 2013/2014 championship which kicked off last August, there was no miracle as hoped by title chasers Liverpool, as Man City saw off visitors West Ham with two unreplied goals: One in first half by Samir Nasri and an early second half goal by skipper Vincent Kompany.

The victory guaranteed City the top spot but, thus making nonsense of Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat of visiting Newcastle, who took a first half lead through Nigerian international Shola Ameobi, who, however, saw red in the second half. For City, it was a replay of what happened in 2012 when they beat Manchester United in a photo finish, having to wait till the final whistle to confirm that they had beaten Man United to the title.

Manchester City and Liverpool qualify for the European Champions League alongside third-placed Chelsea and fourth-placed Arsenal, while Everton and Tottenham, who finished fifth and sixth respectively, will play in the Europa League.
