Breaking News: Nigerian troops rescue 107 female students abducted by Boko Haram •8 still missing

All but eight of the 129 female students of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria, have been rescued, the Nigerian military announced this evening.

The students were kidnapped on Monday night by suspected Boko Haram members, sparking national and international outrage. However, good news came via a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, who disclosed that only eight of the girls were still held captive.

Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, had earlier in the day announced that 14 of the girls escaped from their abductors.

“More students of the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok have been freed this evening in the on-going search and rescue operations to free the abducted students,” Olukolade announced in a statement issued in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

“With this development, the Principal of the School confirmed that only eight of the students are still missing. One of the terrorists who carried out the attack on the school has also been captured. Efforts are underway to locate the remaining eight students,” he added.
