Former foreign technical adviser of Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, , has been appointed as a special advisor to the technical crew of the United States senior national soccer team. Vogts is to assist German compatriot and chief coach of the US team, Jurgen Klinsmann at the FIFA world cup.
Though Vogts would remain as boss of Azerbaijan, his roles in the US team’s set up would be to help in the development of training plans and scouting of the USA opponents during the tournament.
USA coach Klinsmann said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have Berti join us as an advisor. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, both as a player and a coach, and he knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level.”
Continuing, Klinsmann said: “Through his time as head coach of Scotland, Nigeria and Azerbaijan, he is obviously very familiar with our opponents in the group stage of the world cup, and for us this is a huge bonus.”
Vogts was appointed as Super Eagles boss in January 2007 and led Nigeria to the African Nations Cup in Ghana in 2008. The team was knocked out 1-2 by hosts Ghana in the quarter finals of the tournament, after which Vogts fell out with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). He resigned later citing NFF’s failure to honor the contractual agreement he had with them.
The German was unpopular amongst Nigerian football lovers for his insistence on spending most of his time in Europe when he was head of the country’s football team.
