Fulani cattle rearers not welcome in Igbo land, says South-East CAN

The South-East branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned that it would resist any attempt to allocate grazing fields to Fulani cattle rearers in any part of Igbo land.

In a statement in Awka yesterday, the zonal chairman of CAN, Bishop David Eberechukwu, warned those campaigning for the allocation of land as grazing fields for the cattle rearers to desist forthwith as the zone is yet to accommodate all the people from the South-East displaced in the North as a result of the activities of the Boko Haram Islamic sect.

He called on all the governors in the zone to never accept the idea of giving grazing fields to Fulani herdsmen under any circumstance.

According to the cleric, “The governors of the South-East should avoid anything that will make posterity to be against them. The South-East CAN is ready to go on demonstration to resist this move.

“How can we give grazing fields to the Fulani herdsmen knowing fully well that we do not have land in the East? We are eagerly looking for a way to accommodate all our people already displaced in the North as a result of Boko Haram.

“How can this be when we are already experiencing raping of our girls/wives in the hands of the same Fulani rearers?

“Again, the experience of Benue and Plateau where the same herdsmen are fighting the indigenes is not welcomed and we say ‘no’ to their invasion of the entire nation. Allowing them is an importation of wars and everlasting fights with the people.

“We call on the northern governors to please build ranches for their kinsmen who are rearing cattle as this will give them employment and eliminate poverty in their states.”
