Nigeria has received warm greetings from the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth the II, ahead of tomorrow’s grand climax of the country’s centenary celebrations.
Dated 27th February, 2014 and signed ‘Elizabeth R’, the “Message from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the II to the President and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria” made available to News Express by the Office of Dr. Doyin Okupe, Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, reads:
“On the occasion of the Republic of Nigeria celebrating 100 years since the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Nigeria, I send the people of Nigeria my warmest congratulations.
“I have fond memories of my 1st visit to Nigeria in 1956 and again in 2003, as the Head of the Commonwealth. The links between our two countries have deepened over the past 100 years and I hope they will continue to do so.
“I would like to convey my best wishes for the happiness and prosperity of the people of Nigeria.”
News Express reports that the Queen is among 100 centenary heroes (living or dead) to be honoured with awards at a grand ceremony scheduled to hold tomorrow, February 28, at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja.
Nigeria was born on January 1, 1914 after the then British colonial masters amalgamated the Northern and Southern Protectorates. The country gained independence on October 1, 1960.
