March 8 is the international Women’s Day, a day that honours the achievements of women and calls attention to their rights.
The Senate resolution was sequel to a motion titled ”International Women’s Day, Women in the Changing World of Work; Planet 50:50 by 2030”, which was sponsored by Senator Binta Masi of Adamwa North and co-sponsored by Senators Oluremi Tinubu Stella Oduah, among others, during plenary on Wednesday.
Leading debate on the motion, Senator Masi expressed concern that implementation of policies that prohibits violence against women and girls are still very poor, stating that violence against persons prohibition act that was signed into law in 2015 is yet to be domesticated in any states of the federation.
She added that policies are needed to promote women’s access to innovative technologies and protect women from violence in work places, adding that women suffer oppression for being women.
Congratulating the Nigerian women, lawmakers call on the government to pay more attention to issues concerning women, also called on leaders at all levels to give women the chance to contribute their quota.
In his remarks, the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the Wednesday’s plenary, urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to stop violence against women while also calling on government at all levels to give women a quota in all elective offices.
The Upper Chamber mandated the Committee on Women Affairs to look into the Domestication of the Violence against Persons Prohibition Act in all states of the Federation and report back to the senate for further legislative action.
