The city of Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State yesterday experienced chaos as dare devil armed robbers numbering about nine stormed the Police Sand Bag Team stationed in the area and opened fire on them, killing one, shooting another on his leg and collected the AK 47 rifle of their victim.
The attack which took place at8:30pmhappened at Nkpor market under the fly-over alongthe Onitsha/Enugu expressway. It was learnt that the robbers who arrived on three motorcycles positioned themselves well before striking at the unsuspecting Police team.
According to eye witness, Sergeant Mathew Julius was shot dead on the spot when the robbers got to the spot where the Police Patrol van was packed and collected his AK 47 service rifle.
Another Police Officer, Sergeant David Alex, was shot on his leg but he escaped death by the whiskers as he took cover inside the gutter when he was shot.
It was gathered that two other AK 47 rifles that were kept in the Police vehicles were not taken away when the robbers struck as they did not search the van.
Confirming the incident the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Hassan Musa, said the dead as well as the wounded have been taken to Borromeo Hospital, saying they were still investigating with a view to arresting the fleeing robbers.
