A frontline activist based in Anambra State has declared that the result of the supplementary election expected to be conducted possibly this weekend by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will not play any role in deciding the state’s next governor.

Comrade Emeka Umeagbalasi, Chairman of the Board of the Onitsha-based International Society for Civil Liberties & the Rule of Law (Intersociety), told News Express: “As it is now, Mr. Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has satisfied all legal requirements to be declared governor by INEC. The supplementary poll is meant to tighten any loophole against those who will go to court. It is a proper step.”

Umeagbalasi was speaking after analysing the scores of the four major candidates in each of the 21 local government areas of Anambra during last weekend’s governorship election declared inconclusive by INEC. Results released by INEC showed Obiano garnering 174,710 votes as against 94,956 by Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), 92,300 by Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and 37,446 by Ifeanyi Ubah of Labour Party (LP).

“From the results’ analysis, APGA won outright in 16 LGAs and got mandatory 25% in 18 LGAs, followed by PDP winning outright in two LGAs and getting 25% in 9 LGAs. APC came third by winning outright in two LGAs and 25% in seven LGAs,” Umeagbalasi said.

He observed that “the law requires 25% in 2/3 or two thirds of the entire 21 LGAs of the state plus highest number of votes plus majority of LGAs winning to be declared a governor,” adding that “APGA’s Obiano has clearly met all the requirements.”
