CJN Justice Walter Onnoghen
The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Commenting on the development, Senate President Bukola Saraki described Justice Onnoghen’s nomination, screening and eventual confirmation as a milestone and evidence of democratic progress. He said the Senate would ensure that the relationship between the three arms of government is in the interest of the country.
Earlier during his confirmation hearing, Justice Onnoghen responded to questions from the lawmakers. “We all agree there is corruption in the judiciary but very soon, it will be a thing of the past,” he said.
According to Onnoghen, “You do not need to see a judge before you get justice.” He promised to ensure independence of the judiciary, insisting that the judiciary is not the last hope of the common man, but the last hope of every man.
News Expressreports that Onnoghen's name was forwarded for screening by Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, two weeks ago.
The confirmation hearing began with Onnoghen taking senators through his educational background, his service year at the Lagos Ministry of Justice and career till date.
