A Nigerian man sent armed robbers after his wealthy businessman father and used his share of the booty to build a mosque in his place of origin as well as to engage in works of charity.
The Nigerian Robin Hood by name Kabiru Mohammed confessed his crime to the police after the leader of his gang was arrested and named his gang members while being quizzed.
Though the family is from Kano in North-West Nigeria, it settled in Lagos in the South-West, where Kabiru’s father operates a bureau de change at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
Incidentally, the 31-year-old man works with his father. Capitalising on his knowledge of cash movements in the company, he hired a seven-man robbery gang led by the notorious Godogodo (real name Abiodun Ogunjobi) to rob his father twice.
The first operation yielded $350,000, out of which the gang leader gave Kabiru $20,000, while the second operation brought $33,000, out of which he received $8,000. The total amount stolen amounted to $383,000 – a hefty N61.2 million in Nigerian currency.
On both occasions, the money was being conveyed by Kabiru’s older brother Ibrahim – the first time as he moved dollars from the local airport to the international airport and the second time at a bus stop along off the road connecting the local airport.
“I told them not to kill my brother, but to shoot into the air. I knew my brother would release the money because my father told us not to drag money with armed robbers,” The PUNCH, which reported the story, quoted Kabiru as saying.
The young man presently detained at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, revealed that he had been into robbery since 2008 and had even gone on operations with Godogodo. He told The PUNCH that his area of expertise is finding targets and passing information to the gang, which earned him the nickname ‘Target man’.
The paper said that when asked how he spent his loot, Kabiru replied: “I used my money to build a mosque in Kano and buy 17 rams for some people in Kano.”
