National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Sir Victor Umeh, says there is no cause for alarm as the party is sure of winning the Anambra State governorship supplementary election expected to be conducted within a week in the areas where the election was cancelled.

“Not at all!” Umeh replied when newsmen asked if the party was demoralised. “Our victory is only delayed. We will win the supplementary election and be declared governor by next week.”

Representatives of the three loser parties – PDP, APC and Labour Party – at the result announcement in Awka, however, insisted that the entire election should be cancelled as it was not transparent, a request which both INEC and APGA strongly rejected.

As earlier reported by News Express, though APGA’s Chief Willie Obiano won the election held over the weekend, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) this morning refused to declare him the next Governor of the state because the difference between his votes and those of the runner-up is lower than the total number of cancelled votes.

Obiano came first with 174,710 votes, followed by Comrade Tony Nwoye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 94,956 votes, while Senator Chris Ngige of the All Progressives Congress (APC), came third with 92,300 votes.

Epoke explained that whereas the difference between Obiano and Nwoye is less than 95,000 votes while the cancelled votes were around 113,000. He said that the supplementary election, the date of which is yet to be fixed, would involve all the 23 candidates who contested in last weekend’s election.

Epoke disclosed that 1,763,751 registered for the election, 451,856 were accredited while total number of votes cast was 429,449, out of which 413,003 votes were valid and 16,544 rejected.
