Prof. Iyayi’s kinsmen demand N50bn compensation from Kogi Gov •Burial date fixed

Kinsmen of former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Festus Iyayi, have demanded that a compensation of N50 billion be paid to his immediate family by the Kogi State governor, Captain Idris Wada (rtd.).

The demand is contained in a letter to the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Abuja.

A report this morning in Vanguard newspaper said the letter was dated November 13, 2013 and signed by the traditional ruler of Iyayi’s hometown in Edo State, HRM Samuel Obade I, Onojie of Ugbegunland, and some other community leaders.

The community, according to the report, also called for a thorough investigation of the death of its illustrious son, an international award-winning novelist who until his death was a professor of Business Administration and Management at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

Prof. Iyayi died Tuesday in an auto crash involving a car in the convoy of Governor Wada while on his way to Kano for the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of ASUU, which had to be postponed indefinitely as a result of the tragedy.

His burial has been tentatively fixed for the first week of December, according to Prof. Robert Ebewele, a member of the Iyayi family.

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has disclosed that Governor Idris Wada’s convoy has crashed three times within three months.

FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja while fielding questions from journalists during this year’s Africa Road Safety Day/ World Day for Remembrance of Road Traffic Crash Victims.

He also disclosed that the Kogi State Government has not sent its convoy drivers for a special training which the FRSC designed to certify drivers for convoy driving.
