The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has congratulated Abdullahi Mustapha on his election as President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
FIBA also confirmed the eligibility of Sam Ahmedu to serve on the NBBF board.
FIBA conveyed its position in a letter addressed to Mustapha, acknowledging the outcome of the NBBF elective congress held on Oct. 15.
The letter, signed on behalf of FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, also congratulated members elected to serve on the NBBF board for the 2026-2030 term.
FIBA commended the federation for completing the electoral process and reaffirmed its commitment to good governance and compliance with its constitution and applicable regulations.
It also acknowledged the support and recognition provided by relevant Nigerian authorities and stakeholders throughout the electoral process.
On Ahmedu’s eligibility, FIBA confirmed that there were no regulatory impediments to his service on the NBBF board.
The letter said FIBA confirmed Ahmedu as the most senior Nigerian on its boards since 1997, with no regulatory impediment to his service on the NBBF board.
The clarification followed a request by the NBBF to the international governing body.
FIBA also expressed appreciation to the outgoing NBBF board, led by Ahmadu Musa Kida, for its contributions and achievements during its tenure.
Kida, a member of the FIBA Finance Commission, did not seek a third term after serving eight years as NBBF president.
Mustapha won the Oct. 15 election with 40 votes, defeating Olumide Oyedeji, who polled eight votes.
Former candidate Ejike Ugboaja received no votes, while Igoche Mark withdrew from the contest. (NAN)
