Gunmen have reportedly killed a police officer on his way to duty post along the Kwi-Beco road, a community between Riyom and Barikn Ladi local government areas of Plateau State.
The incident, according to sources, occurred at about 7pm on Thursday.
The development came amid heightened tensions in Mangu, Bokkos and Barikin Ladi LGAs where government recently imposed curfew to douse tensions.
Our correspondent reports that the affected security operative was reportedly riding on a motorcycle to his duty post in the Chit area of Heipang District, when he was attacked and killed.
Sources said the assailants also made away with the motorcycle after the attack.
The spokesman of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident and described it as disturbing.
Tengwong lamented that the killing of a security operative raised serious concerns about the safety of civilians in the affected communities.
He said the group was particularly troubled that security personnel deployed to protect residents were themselves vulnerable to attacks.
The BYM spokesman condemned the killing and called for urgent measures to address the security challenges confronting communities in the area.
The spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Alabo Alfred, did not respond to inquiry from our correspondent as of press time.
Daily Trust reports that despite the recent imposition of curfew, attacks and killings have continued in the state. (Daily Trust)
