The Police Command in Benue has confirmed the arrest of Dr Jonah Ogbaji, Medical Director of Multicare Hospital, Makurdi.
DSP Peter Orchia, Police Public Relations Officer in Benue, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Makurdi.
Orchia said Ogbaji was arrested by officials of the special tactical squad attached to the Force Intelligence Department (FID), Abuja, and subsequently taken to the A Division Police Station in Makurdi.
He, however, said the circumstances surrounding the arrest were yet to be fully established.
“The information I have is that he was arrested by officials from Abuja and brought to A Division.
“I am yet to get the full details of why he was arrested,” Orchia said.
NAN reports that Ogbaji was earlier reported to have been abducted from the hospital premises at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday while attending to patients.
A credible source had told NAN that some persons dressed in police uniforms arrived at the hospital in a Toyota Sienna vehicle, handcuffed Ogbaji and took him away.
The source said the incident had initially raised concerns over his whereabouts, prompting his family to visit several police stations in Makurdi.
The police spokesman, however, clarified that the medical director was arrested by police officials and not abducted. (NAN, excluding headline)
