Nigerian music video director and cinematographer ThankGod Omori, popularly known as TG Omori, has revealed that his only brother donated one of his kidneys to help save his life during a severe health crisis.

Omori disclosed the development in August 2024 while giving an update on his condition after staying away from the public eye.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the director revealed that the kidney transplant had taken place on August 26, 2024.

“Yesterday my only brother gave me one of his kidneys so I could live again,” he wrote.

The revelation came alongside an emotional photo shared by Omori on Instagram, showing him lying in a hospital bed while receiving oxygen. In the accompanying message, he wrote, “Keep my spirit alive. I don’t wanna die.”

The disclosure drew an outpouring of support from fans, colleagues and other members of the entertainment industry, many of whom prayed for his recovery and praised his brother’s decision to donate a kidney.

However, Omori later revealed that the transplant had not succeeded.

In a subsequent post, he said he had undergone the procedure at St Nicholas Hospital in Lagos and that it was unsuccessful.

“One year after my kidney crashed, I just had a failed transplant at St Nicolas Lagos. Pray for me,” he wrote.

He also disclosed that he had gone into the operating theatre three times, underscoring the severity of the health battle he had been facing.

Omori had previously revealed in April 2024 that he had quit smoking. Following his kidney-related health disclosures, some social media users linked his condition to his previous lifestyle, although such online speculation did not establish the cause of his illness. Guardian reported at the time that some fans attributed his kidney failure to smoking and drinking, while others noted that lifestyle factors alone could not be used to determine the cause of kidney disease.

The director continued to update his followers during his recovery. Days after announcing the failed transplant, he said he was healing from the stitches and remained determined to continue fighting.

“Up and grateful o lord,” Omori wrote in another update. He added that he had been dealing with the health challenge for a year or two and was determined not to give up.

Known professionally as Boy Director, Omori has directed music videos for several of Nigeria’s leading artistes, including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Olamide, Asake, Fireboy DML and Naira Marley.

Despite the setback, Omori later returned to work. In February 2025, The Guardian reported that he had returned to a music video set, months after the unsuccessful transplant, signalling his return to directing.

His brother’s donation remains one of the most significant details of the health ordeal, as Omori publicly credited him with giving him another chance at life. (Guardian)
