World Trade Organisation Director-General, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has joined other prominent figures to honour former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo at a tribute event in New York.
Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian economist who has served as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation since March 2021, said the event was held to celebrate Obasanjo’s legacy.
In a statement posted on her official x/ twitter handle , she described the gathering as “a glorious night of tributes to an outstanding leader,” noting that the event was organised by the Chief Executive Officer of Mutandis Africa, Chinelo Anohu.
She said she was honoured to deliver the opening tribute, followed by contributions from several prominent personalities.
Among those in attendance, according to Okonjo-Iweala, were former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf; Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley; business mogul Aliko Dangote; United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed; Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; President of Afreximbank, Dr George Elombi; Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu; Managing Director of the World Bank Group and Vice President of the International Finance Corporation, Makhtar Diop; and Seplat Energy founder, Austin Avuru.
