The Nigerian Army has commenced a review of its logistics capabilities to strengthen operational effectiveness in joint military environments.

Maj.-Gen. Peter Okoye, Chief of Transformation and Innovation, disclosed this at the 2026 Transformation and Innovation Needs Assessment Seminar on Tuesday in Lagos.

The theme of the seminar was, “Logistics Needs Assessment: Developing the Competencies and Capabilities of Nigerian Army Logistics Staff for Operational Effectiveness in a Joint Environment.”

Okoye said reviewing the army’s logistics capabilities was necessary due to the changing nature of military operations and the complex security environment.

According to him, operations across different theatres were being conducted in difficult terrains and demanding conditions, making timely logistics support essential.

“Logistics personnel must anticipate operational requirements, coordinate resources and sustain troops throughout different phases of military operations,” he said.

Okoye highlighted technology’s growing influence on military logistics, citing unmanned systems, precision capabilities, cyber operations, electronic warfare and data-driven technologies.

He said the developments were creating new demands for effective and responsive logistics support.

The army officer said the seminar would examine available resources, improve maintenance and asset management, and strengthen accountability.

Okoye said it would also promote better integration of logistics planning into military operations.

Also speaking, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, said the seminar was necessary amid current security challenges.

He listed terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other asymmetric threats among the challenges facing the country.

Represented by Maj.-Gen. Abdullahi Ibrahim, Corps Commander Ordnance, Shaibu stressed that effective logistics remained fundamental to operational success.

He said this remained the case regardless of the quality of military plans or tactical proficiency of personnel.

“Participants are expected to engage in technical discussions and interactive sessions aimed at developing realistic recommendations to address identified capability gaps,” he said.

The army chief said the seminar’s outcome would provide a roadmap for developing logistics personnel’s competencies and strengthening institutional capacity.

He added that the recommendations would support the Nigerian Army’s current and future operations. (NAN)
