The next-generation TB vaccines
By JUSTINA AUTA
The global fight against tuberculosis (TB) is set for a major breakthrough as next-generation TB vaccines are expected to become available from 2029, ending more than a century of reliance on a single licensed vaccine.
According to information shared on the official social media handle of the global TB community, posted by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the new vaccines could save an estimated 7.3 million lives by 2050.
It noted that the vaccines could also generate up to 135 billion U.S. dollars in economic benefits for low- and middle-income countries over the same period.
The update highlighted that the world has depended on a single licensed TB vaccine for more than 100 years, but this is expected to change with the introduction of next-generation vaccines.
The projected health and economic gains underscore the importance of accelerating research, development and equitable access to innovative TB prevention tools, particularly in countries bearing the highest burden of the disease.
Tuberculosis remains one of the world’s leading infectious disease killers, with low- and middle-income countries accounting for the majority of cases and deaths.
The anticipated vaccines are expected to strengthen global efforts to reduce TB transmission, prevent new infections and support progress toward ending the epidemic. (NAN)
