The Airport Police Command has dismissed reports of a terrorist attack at Asaba International Airport, attributing the security activities observed on Thursday, September 10, 2026, to a planned and coordinated security simulation exercise.

The exercise, conducted by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), was designed to assess and strengthen the preparedness and response capabilities of relevant security and emergency-response agencies, the police said.

The clarification comes amidst speculations about an alleged security breach have circulated on social media and other platforms, causing concern among travellers and airport users.

According to the Airport Police Command, what was observed at Asaba International Airport on Thursday, September 10, 2026, was not an actual security breach or terrorist attack but rather a controlled, authorized simulation exercise.

The exercise was a joint initiative of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) aimed at testing the security preparedness infrastructure at the airport. It involved the deployment of security personnel and other relevant stakeholders who recreated a simulated security incident within the airport environment.

“The simulation exercise involved the deployment of security personnel and other relevant stakeholders to recreate a simulated security incident within the airport environment for the purpose of testing existing response mechanisms, communication channels, command and control structures, and the ability of participating agencies to respond effectively to potential security emergencies. The Command consequently urges members of the public, particularly travellers and airport users, to disregard the false narrative and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and panic.

“The Command reassures the public that the security situation at the airport remains under control and that all relevant security agencies remain vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety and security of passengers, airport personnel, facilities, and other stakeholders,” the statement said.

The command said that despite the misreporting of the exercise, airport security remains robust and that travellers can use the facility with confidence.

“The Command encourages members of the public to rely on verified information from authorised government and security agencies and to support ongoing efforts to strengthen national security preparedness and safeguard critical airport infrastructure,” the statement noted. (The Nation)
