Lecturers in the three state-owned universities have vowed to embark on strike if the Lagos State Government failed to meet their demands after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), warned the state government to implement the 2025 FG/ASUU signed agreement or face industrial action.

The congresses of the three universities with the approval of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, on Friday, August 31st, 2026 issued the state government 14-day ultimatum to implement the agreement or their members will down tool.

In a joint statement, the unions issued a final warning to the state government over its continued silence on the union’s demands as the ultimatum approaches its expiration.

The statement, which was signed by the Coordinator, ASUU-LASU Steering Committee, Dr. Olusegun Babalola, acting chairman, ASUU-LASUED, Comrade Grace Abimbola and chairman, ASUU-LASUSTECH, Comrade Murisiku Onigemo, called on the governor and relevant authorities of the state government to rise to the responsibility and act before the deadline.

It added: “Only one day remain. Yet, 13 days after the ultimatum was issued, the Lagos State Government has neither invited the union to dialogue nor communicated any concrete plan to resolve the issues at stake.

The union considers this silence deeply disturbing and unacceptable. “

“On August 31st, 2026, ASUU formally gave the Lagos State Government a 14-day ultimatum demanding the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement. The ultimatum followed more

than eight months of patience and restraint by the union in the hope that the outstanding issues would be addressed through constructive engagement. That patience is now being severely tested.”

The chairmen said union’s demands are neither ambiguous nor unreasonable but centre on the domestication and implementation of the 2025 agreement, including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and other essential welfare provisions.

According to the union leaders, the agreement also contained provisions intended to safeguard the welfare of retired professors who continue to experience difficult circumstances, arguing, “the Lagos State Government cannot continue to treat these issues with silence.”

The union said Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Abia and Enugu government states have already domesticated and implemented the agreement.

It noted: “Lagos State, with its enormous resources and strategic importance to Nigeria’s educational development, should not be the state that chooses inaction where others have demonstrated commitment.”

They reminded the government that the 14-day ultimatum will expire today and urged the government to take advantage of the window of opportunity to avert an industrial crisis.

“We call on the government to immediately open meaningful negotiations with the union and demonstrate, through concrete action rather than assurances, its commitment to the welfare of university workers and the stability of the state’s tertiary education system,” the union stated. (The Sun)
