Tax Payers Association tasks FG on multiple taxation

The Tax Payers Association of Nigeria (TAPAN) has called on the federal government to urgently fix the economic malaise known as multiple taxation.

In a press statement in Abuja signed by the association’s BOT Chairman, Comrade Valentine Nzekwe, and President, Barm Philip Ilokhulo, TAPAN commended the Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for her position on Nigeria multiple taxation and consequences on the economy. It warned that unless the minister’s advice is heeded, the trend, including the cumbersome nature of tax filling processes faced by tax payers, could have adverse effects on business and economy.

According to the association, “The minister is right; this could kill business and have adverse effect on tax payers.”

TAPAN urged the government to adhere to the advice of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and review the various taxes and levies on Nigerian businesses to ensure effective diversification of the economy and encourage competition.

The association further called on tax authorities and the federal government to ensure that there is transparency in the tax regime and also make the procedure for payment easier for tax payers.

TAPAN said: “The tax payers have been at the receiving end of very cumbersome procedure and management and use of what the majority of Nigerian tax payers. We must ensure things change.”

While commending President Goodluck Jonathan for the giant strides in agricultural sector, works and transport, the association wondered why some states would have 97 different taxes, levies and charges imposed on business operators.
