Igbo women are strengthening their communities through collective action, using the annual August Meeting to mobilise resources, support vulnerable people, promote economic opportunities and execute development projects.

While government, traditional institutions, prominent leaders and large organisations often dominate discussions on community development, women’s associations, cooperatives, market groups and other women-led organisations have continued to play an important role at the grassroots.

Through these groups, women pool resources, support one another and respond to pressing needs in their communities.

Their contributions extend beyond the home, with women leaders organising initiatives, mobilising funds, creating economic opportunities and supporting programmes that benefit families and the wider community.

The August Meeting has become a major platform for this collective effort. The annual homecoming brings generations of Igbo women together to reconnect, exchange ideas, mentor younger women, preserve cultural values and deliberate on issues affecting their communities.

Over the years, the gatherings have helped strengthen women-led associations, cooperatives and other groups through which funds are raised and projects executed to address community needs.

Such projects include the construction and renovation of schools, health centres and civic centres, as well as the provision of boreholes, market stalls and skill acquisition centres.

These activities have made women important drivers of grassroots development, demonstrating how leadership, organisation and collective action can turn individual efforts into community-wide impact.
