The 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in the country collected N1.2trn from electricity supplied to customers in the first half of 2026, analysis of commercial factsheets of DisCos released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has shown.

The Factsheet showed that N1.2trn collected was from the 1,502.63 billed to customers during the period.

This means that customers did not pay N301bn or 20 percent of their bills during the period.

A monthly breakdown showed N204.74bn was collected in January which dropped to N196.68bn in February and a slight drop to N196.13bn in March.

In April, collection increased to N203.61bn and N208.15bn in May before dropping to N191.86bn in June.

Analysis based on DisCos’ collection indicated that Ikeja Disco made the highest revenue with a total of N227.56bn followed by Abuja DisCo with N215.12bn, Eko DisCo with N227.56 and Ibadan DisCo with N124.47bn.

This is followed by Benin DisCo with N99.89bn, then Port Harcourt DisCo with N97.79bn and Enugu DisCo with N89.14bn. others include; Kano DisCo with N48.91bn Jos DisCo with 39.38bn, Kaduna Disco with N30.93bn and Yola DisCo with N19.83bn.

On electricity that was billed but not paid, the factsheets stated that N63.46bn was not paid in January which reduced to N45.61bn in February but increased to N50.31bn in March.

It further went down to N48.8bn in April and N44.73bn in March before rising to N48.87bn in April.

On DisCos’ loss, it said the DisCo with the highest loss is Abuja DisCo with N46.79bn unpaid. This is followed by customers in Kano DisCo with N40.36bn, then customers in Ibadan DisCo with N35.54bn and Kaduna DisCo with N32.36bn.

Others include, Enugu DisCo with N31.33bn, Jos Disco with N29.98bn unpaid electricity, Eko DisCo with N24.35bn, Ikeja with N22.29bn, Port Harcourt DisCo with N18.29bn Benin Disco with N12.53bn and Yola DisCo with N7.96bn.

Data show Kaduna, Kano DisCos in distress

The factsheets showed that Kaduna and Kano are in distress due to the percentage of revenue they were able to collect from their customers.

The data showed that Kaduna DisCo is operating at a loss with the company able to recover 48 percent of electricity billed to its customers, it was not able to recover N32.36bn from the N63.29bn electricity given to its customers.

For Kano DisCo, it was able to collect 54.79 percent of the electricity given to its customers. This means it received N48.91bn from the N89.27bn it issued to its customers. While N40.36bn remained unpaid.

Also, Jos DisCo was able to recover 56.78 per cent of its revenue, collecting N39.38bn from the N69.36bn, with N29.98bn left unpaid. (Daily Trust)
