Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott came off the bench to score the winner as Real Betis beat Real Madrid - with Kylian Mbappe missing an injury-time penalty.

The Dubliner, 24, came on in the 68th minute and pounced to score from close range after Thibaut Courtois parried Nelson Deossa's header.

This was his third appearance and his first goal for Manuel Pellegrini's Betis since his £17.1m move from AZ Alkmaar.

Carlos Espi thought he had rescued a point for the visitors with an acrobatic volley from Vinicius Jr's cross but it was ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee.

And even later than that, Madrid were awarded a penalty for a foul on Vinicius but Mbappe's injury-time effort was saved by Alvaro Valles.

The result ended Jose Mourinho's three-game winning start to his second spell as Real Madrid manager.

Mourinho knows Parrott well, having given him his only two Premier League appearances with Tottenham in 2019-20.

The striker went out on loan to several EFL clubs in Millwall, Ipswich, MK Dons and Preston but failed to impress enough to break through at Spurs.

A more successful loan spell at Dutch side Excelsior followed and that earned him a £6.7m move to league rivals AZ.

He scored 51 goals in 97 games in Alkmaar before moving to La Liga side Real Betis this summer - having also been chased by West Ham.

On the international scene he made his name in November when five goals in the space of four days against Portugal and Hungary took the Irish into the World Cup play-offs, which they lost. (BBC)
