Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has convened a meeting of the State Security Council, directing security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration and preventive operations to safeguard lives and property across the state.

The meeting, held at the New Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, on Wednesday, brought together the Deputy Governor, heads of security and law enforcement agencies, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da. Jacob Gyang Buba, and other top government officials.

The council reviewed emerging security threats, recent attacks in some communities, intelligence sharing and preventive strategies aimed at ensuring that residents, visitors and businesses can operate in a safe and secure environment.

Speaking after the meeting, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, said the meeting was part of the governor’s periodic assessment of the security situation and his determination to strengthen existing measures.

Faniyan, who described Mutfwang as the Chief Security Officer of the state, said the council was convened to identify security gaps and take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence of recent incidents.

“His Excellency Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang is the Chief Security Officer of the state, and once in a while, we review the security situation. We assess the security situation in order to take steps to improve on what we already have,” he said.

The police commissioner described the recent attacks in Mangu as unfortunate, saying the incident was one of the issues that informed the governor’s decision to convene the security council.

“The Mangu case was very unfortunate. We prepared and deployed, but somehow, such incidents still occurred. That is part of why His Excellency called this meeting so that such must not happen again,” Faniyan said.

He disclosed that security agencies had made arrests in connection with some of the major attacks recorded in the state in the past month, adding that investigations were ongoing to identify other suspects and establish their roles.

“We have some arrests; investigation is ongoing. We are not investigating in isolation. We are collaborating with all the other agencies up to the national level. We are still going after some suspects, and we are doing a lot of technological analysis,” he said.

Faniyan assured residents that security agencies had received the governor’s marching orders and would intensify efforts to protect lives and property while responding swiftly to emerging threats.

He also called on residents to support the administration by providing credible and timely information about suspicious persons, movements and activities, stressing that effective security required a strong partnership between security agencies and the communities.

The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of security agencies to preserving Plateau’s identity as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” warning that criminal elements would not be allowed to undermine the state’s reputation.

He said proactive security measures had become increasingly important as the ember months approach and political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Faniyan stressed that the objective of the security council was not simply to respond to attacks after they occurred, but to strengthen intelligence-led operations capable of identifying and neutralising threats before they materialise.

The meeting, according to the state government, underscores the Mutfwang administration’s commitment to consolidating peace and security as a foundation for investment, tourism, agriculture, commerce and sustainable economic development in Plateau State. (Channels TV)
