Halima Dangote
The family office, based in Dubai and overseen by his daughter Halima Dangote, is being positioned as an investment hub for the family’s businesses and wealth, with a focus on governance, capital management and philanthropy.
Halima said in a Bloomberg TV interview that the family office is expected to become more visible from the first quarter of 2027 after years of planning.
“By the first quarter of next year, you will start to see the presence of the family office,” Halima said.
The objective is not simply to manage Dangote’s wealth today, but to create a structure capable of preserving the family’s business interests for eight to 10 generations.
That puts the initiative at the centre of a broader succession strategy for an empire that has grown from a trading business into one of Africa’s largest privately controlled industrial groups.
Building an empire beyond its founder
Dangote’s fortune is currently estimated at about $35 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His wealth is tied largely to his interests across cement, fertiliser, food and the massive Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos.
For Dangote, that long-term planning also extends beyond commercial assets.
In July, Halima disclosed that her father plans to dedicate one-third of his wealth to charity, a commitment that has already received the backing of members of his immediate family. Based on his current fortune, the pledge would be worth roughly $11.7 billion.
Halima said Dangote had asked her, her two sisters and his mother to sign an arrangement supporting the charitable commitment, reflecting his desire for philanthropy to continue across generations.
The Aliko Dangote Foundation has already become a major vehicle for the family’s philanthropic activities, focusing on areas including health, education, nutrition and humanitarian support.
About 70% of its spending goes to Nigeria, with another 20% supporting projects elsewhere in Africa, according to reporting on Halima’s Bloomberg interview.
The family office will therefore sit at the intersection of three priorities: preserving the family fortune, managing investments and extending Dangote’s philanthropic legacy.
The move also reflects the growing importance of succession planning among Africa’s wealthiest families, as founders of major privately held businesses seek to ensure that their fortunes and companies survive beyond their lifetimes.
For Dangote, the challenge is no longer simply building Africa’s largest industrial fortune. It is creating the institutions and governance structures capable of keeping that fortune intact — and productive — long after its founder is no longer running the empire. (Business Insider Africa)
