The United States has condemned the killing of members of the family of Plateau cleric, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, describing the attack as disturbing and calling for those responsible to be brought to justice without delay.

In a statement issued on Friday, the US expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and others affected by the attack, while raising concern over the persistent violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable groups in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

The US said it had recently discussed the worsening security situation with Nigerian officials, stressing the need for stronger measures to prevent further attacks.

It urged the authorities to strengthen security and ensure the protection of Christians and other vulnerable communities.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Nigerian government and other partners to combat terrorism, counter violent extremism and promote an environment where all Nigerians can practise their faith freely without fear of violence or persecution.

The statement reads, “The United States strongly condemns the horrific killing of members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s family in Plateau State, Nigeria. The continued violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is deeply alarming.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families and all those affected. As I discussed last week with Nigerian officials, we must do more to prevent violent acts like those yesterday. The perpetrators must be held accountable, and urgent action is needed to strengthen security and protect Christians and other vulnerable communities.

“The United States remains committed to working with the Nigerian government and our partners to combat terrorism, counter violent extremism, and ensure that Christians and all Nigerians can live and practice their faith freely without fear of violence or persecution.”

The condemnation followed the killing of nine members of Dachomo’s extended family, including a two-month-old baby, during an overnight attack on Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on July 12.

Dachomo, the Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations for Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, said his family had repeatedly come under attack because of his campaign against what he described as genocide in the state.

He also revealed that his grandmother and an uncle were killed in separate attacks carried out by extremists.

The cleric further disclosed that shortly after burying his relatives, he received a written threat from the same militia, warning that he would be their next target after the killing of nine members of his family. (Tribune News)
