The United Kingdom government has released details of the first telephone conversation between newly sworn-in Prime Minister Andy Burnham and United States President Donald Trump.

According to a statement posted on the UK government website, the Prime Minister spoke with President Trump shortly after taking office on Monday, with both leaders discussing bilateral ties, economic priorities, defence, and developments in the Middle East.

Burnham began the conversation by congratulating President Trump on what the UK government described as a successful FIFA World Cup and praised England’s performance during the tournament.

The Prime Minister also expressed hope that President Trump would visit Manchester in the future to experience what the northern English city has to offer.

Setting out his priorities for his administration, Burnham said his government would focus on reindustrialising communities across the United Kingdom to promote economic growth nationwide.

According to the statement, the Prime Minister stressed that his administration would pursue policies aimed at ensuring “good growth in every postcode.”

Burnham also reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Britain’s defence and security, telling President Trump that protecting the United Kingdom and its allies would remain at the top of his government’s agenda.

President Trump, in turn, briefed the Prime Minister on the latest developments in the Middle East.

During the discussion, Burnham reiterated the UK’s commitment to safeguarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, describing the waterway as critical to global supply chains.

The Prime Minister said maintaining freedom of navigation in the strategic corridor would help support international trade and reduce costs for businesses and households.

The two leaders concluded the call by expressing their desire to remain in close contact and looked forward to speaking again soon, the UK government said. (Nigerian Tribune)
