The Edo State government has begun investigation into a property believed to be owned by a former governor of the defunct Bendel State, Prof. Ambrose Alli.

Several persons were said to have previously claimed ownership of the property.

The building is located on Uwasota Road, Egor Local Government and currently being occupied by a private school.

Some residents in the area said they were told the estate was built by one of the many contractors engage by the Alli administration to compensate the then governor, but that proper documentation was not done.

Some said the building was built by a late personal assistant to the former governor, but that the personal assistant never brought his family to the property before Prof. Alli was kicked out of office and imprisoned.

Chairman of Edo State Public Property Protection Committee, Eugene Okoloise, visited the property for assessment.

Okoloise said the committee was informed that the late Alli visited the property and built a road to the place.

“We have been calling them to come and substantiate their claims, but they have been running.

“I will take the matter to Governor Monday Okpebholo. He has the final say on the matter.”

The late Prof. Alli governed Bendel State between 1979 and 1983. He had no house at the time he lost his re-election to former Governor Samuel Ogbemudia.

After he left office, he went to live in his family house. He was arrested when the military came to power in 1983 and sentenced to 100 years by a military tribunal for allegedly misappropriating N983,000 meant for a road project. (The Nation)
