NDC Presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi
The NDC-Peter Obi Support Network (NDC-POSN) has called on the Federal Government to investigate allegations by Peter Obi that he is being subjected to systematic harassment and intimidation, warning that such actions could undermine Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the group expressed concern over comments made by Obi during an interview on the “With Chude” programme, where the former Anambra State governor alleged that government actions were frustrating his personal and political activities.
According to the group, Obi’s claims that he could “not even be alive” to contest the 2027 presidential election should be treated with the seriousness they deserve.
The support group quoted Obi as alleging that “every single thing I do for a living, this government is deliberately frustrating,” citing an incident in which his vehicle was reportedly locked at an airport while others were left untouched.
Obi also claimed that some associates now avoid being seen with him or inviting him to social events for fear of possible government reprisals.
Describing the allegations as disturbing, NDC-POSN said any attempt to intimidate political opponents, frustrate their legitimate activities or isolate them socially would constitute a threat to constitutional rights and the country’s democratic process.
The group declared its solidarity with Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, saying it rejected “all acts of intimidation and undue interference” against opposition figures.
It urged the Federal Government to conduct a transparent investigation into the allegations and ensure that no individual or agency engages in actions capable of endangering lives or restricting lawful political participation.
The group also appealed to the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services to provide adequate security for Obi, his family and other political actors exercising their democratic rights.
In addition, NDC-POSN called on political stakeholders to uphold the rule of law, respect human rights and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
The support group reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising support for the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, insisting that alleged attempts to intimidate opposition members would not deter its campaign for what it described as “a New Nigeria.”
It also urged its members and supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding while continuing their political activities. (The Nation)
