The Police in Enugu State have confirmed the arrest of a suspected cultist and recovered a firearm, live ammunition and other incriminating exhibits in Oji River Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, made this known in a statement issued in Enugu on Sunday.
Ndukwe said the suspect, a 25-year-old man from Awka, Anambra State, was arrested by operatives attached to the Oji River Division in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group on June 13 at about 2p.m.
The Police spokesman noted that the detention of the suspect followed the operatives’ swift response to credible information regarding his presence at a criminal black spot within the Garki-Ugwuoba axis of Oji River Local Government Area.
According to him, one locally made double-barrelled pistol loaded with one live cartridge and a lighter were recovered from the suspect.
“The suspect is currently assisting the police in ongoing investigations aimed at identifying and apprehending his criminal associates, as well as uncovering their involvement in cult-related and other criminal activities within the area.
“He will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” he said.
Ndukwe said that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Mamman Giwa, has reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to combating cultism and other violent crimes across the state.
He also urged residents to continue being law-abiding, vigilant and promptly provide credible information to the police and other security agencies to enhance public safety and security. (NAN)
