Mob attack
The Kaduna State Police Command has condemned the killing of a woman by a mob in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State, following allegations of child theft.
The Command described the incident as barbaric, criminal, and a direct assault on the rule of law, vowing to ensure that those involved are brought to justice.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the incident occurred on June 21, 2026, after the woman was accused by some residents of stealing a child, despite no evidence supporting the claim.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maraban Jos reportedly received a distress call around 10:00 a.m. that the woman was being attacked by a mob.
He said the DPO and his team quickly mobilised to the scene, rescued her, and took her into protective custody at the police station pending investigation.
However, the situation escalated when hundreds of residents allegedly stormed the station, overpowered officers on duty, and forcefully removed the woman from custody.
“The crowd overpowered officers, dragged the woman out of the station, killed her and set her body ablaze,” the statement said.
The police further disclosed that the victim was a native of Maraban Jos.
Reacting, the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, CP Rabiu Muhammad, condemned the attack, warning that the Command would not tolerate jungle justice, mob violence, or assaults on police formations.
He stressed that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of allegations against a suspect.
The Commissioner assured residents that justice would be served, adding that several suspects had already been arrested, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend others involved.
“A comprehensive investigation has commenced, and all those found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” the police stated.
The Command urged members of the public to report suspicious persons or activities to security agencies and allow lawful investigations to take their course rather than resorting to self-help. (Sunday Vanguard)
