Every year, thousands of Nigerian graduates leave school believing that their certificates will guarantee employment. Unfortunately, many soon discover that qualifications alone are no longer enough in today's competitive job market.
One of the major concerns in Nigeria today is the continuous rise in unemployment. Although Nigeria's official unemployment rate is estimated at about 4.3%, with youth unemployment around 6.5%, many graduates still struggle to secure meaningful employment after years of education and sacrifice.
A common complaint among graduates is that after dedicating several years to academic studies in pursuit of a better future, they are unable to find jobs that match their qualifications. Some are forced to take up roadside trading, small-scale businesses, or jobs unrelated to their fields of study. While the challenging economic environment, poor infrastructure, and limited job opportunities contribute to this problem, many graduates overlook another important factor: the lack of relevant practical skills.
Many people assume that obtaining a degree automatically guarantees employment. Unfortunately, this is no longer the reality. Employers today are not only looking for certificates; they are searching for individuals who can demonstrate competence, creativity, adaptability, and practical knowledge. In an increasingly competitive job market, qualifications alone are often insufficient.
Success in any profession requires the ability to apply knowledge in real-life situations. For example, a nursing graduate may possess excellent academic results, but without practical experience using medical equipment and carrying out essential procedures, performing effectively in a healthcare environment becomes difficult. The same principle applies across many professions.
This reality highlights the importance of skill development. Students should take advantage of internships, vocational training, digital skills programmes, entrepreneurship opportunities, and other forms of practical learning while still in school. By doing so, they become more employable and better equipped to meet the demands of today's workforce.
It is equally important to recognise that school is not the only path to success. Skills, experience, discipline, communication, emotional intelligence, and continuous self-improvement can be just as valuable as academic qualifications. Some of the world's most successful individuals built their careers through a combination of formal education, practical experience, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Ultimately, education should not end in the classroom. Graduates who combine academic knowledge with practical skills are often more prepared to seize opportunities and overcome challenges. While governments and employers have a responsibility to create more opportunities, students and graduates must also take responsibility for developing themselves beyond their certificates.
School remains a powerful foundation for growth and development, but a certificate is only a piece of paper if it is not backed by competence. In today's world, true success belongs not only to those who study hard but also to those who continuously learn, build skills, and apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems.
