Scene of the accident
Two yet-to-be-identified women lost their lives in a fatal hit-and-run accident along the Car Park C area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday evening.
The Head of Media for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday.
According to Akinbiyi, the crash occurred at about 6:31 pm at Car Park C, the outbound section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when the victims were attempting to cross the highway.
He stated that the women were knocked down by a vehicle, which fled the scene immediately after the incident.
TRACE, however, noted that a white Mini Howo truck with registration number AKR 201 XD was later recovered and towed by officers of the Redeemed Police Motor Traffic Division.
The statement read, “At about 1836HRS on 12/06/2026, a fatal hit-and-run crash occurred at Car Park C Outbound, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“Two unidentified female pedestrians attempting to cross the road were knocked down by an unknown vehicle, which fled the scene.”
He explained that one of the victims died at the scene, while the second woman died while being evacuated to the hospital.
Akinbiyi added that emergency responders from the Ogun State Emergency Medical Services Ambulance Service attended to the victims and transported them to Redeemed Hospital.
“One female victim was confirmed dead at the scene, while the second female victim later died during the evacuation process to the hospital.
“Upon arrival at Redeemed Hospital, medical personnel confirmed both victims dead and subsequently deposited their remains at the hospital morgue,” the statement added.
He disclosed that TRACE operatives, alongside officials of OGSEMSAS, the Amotekun Corps, and the Redeemed Police Motor Traffic Division, managed traffic and secured the accident scene.
Akinbiyi noted that the crash partially disrupted vehicular movement along the corridor before normal traffic flow was restored following the evacuation of the victims and clearance of the scene.
He concluded that the case had been handed over to the police for further investigation.
The incident adds to the growing number of pedestrian fatalities recorded on major highways in Ogun State, particularly along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
In March, PUNCH Online reported that an unidentified man was killed in a hit-and-run accident at the Magboro end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while attempting to cross the highway.
Witnesses had said that the driver fled immediately after the crash, leaving the victim to die at the scene.
Similarly, in May, a pedestrian was knocked down and killed by a Toyota Coaster bus at Imowo, along the Imowo-Ibadan Road in Ijebu Ode.
Traffic officials attributed the crash to the victim’s attempt to cross the road without adequately checking for oncoming vehicles. (Saturday PUNCH)
