Activist Vincent Ezekwueme
Social Critic and Human Rights Activist, Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, Chairman of the Civil Liberties Organization CLO, Anambra State Branch, has commenced a 14-day self-imposed hunger strike to protest the abductions of teachers, pupils and students from school in Oyo State.
Addressing journalists in the state capital Awka yesterday, Friday, June 5, 2026, Comrade Ezekwueme stated that “the hunger strike is an act of solidarity with the excruciating suffering, agony and pains being endured by the abducted citizens, their parents, siblings, families, and all compassionate Nigerians who desire their unconditional release.”
He further stated that the action is intended to draw the urgent attention of the abductors to the call for unconditional release of all victims. “It is also a direct appeal to government at all tiers and security agencies to expedite action toward securing the safe and unconditional return of the abducted persons,” the rights activist said.
Core Appeal
Comrade Ezekwueme passionately appealed to Nigerians to uphold the dignity, sanctity and sacredness of human life, which he described as the image of God and also for repentance of perpetrators.
“I most passionately appeal to perpetrators to repent and renounce such heinous crime. It is of great relevance for all tiers of governments to improve the security architecture of our dear country,” he said.
Historical Context
News Express reports that this is not the first time Comrade Ezekwueme has resorted to self-sacrifice to demand justice. He previously embarked on similar hunger strikes during the annulment of the June 12, 1992 election, as well as after the abductions of Chibok and Dapchi school children.
Call to Action
Calling for concrete action to rescue the victims, Comrade Ezekwueme said: “The Civil Liberties Organization, Anambra State Branch, calls on the Federal Government, Oyo and Kwara State Governments, the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, and all relevant security agencies to prioritize the rescue of the victims and restore confidence in the safety of schools across Nigeria.
“I equally appeal to governments at all levels to beef up security around various schools in the country for safety and adequate security of students.”
