A local vigilante group in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State has been accused of allegedly killing three persons and later presenting a weapon purportedly recovered from the scene after the incident.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred in Dusai Village on May 26 following a confrontation linked to suspected terrorist activities in the area.
According to the sources, members of the vigilante group were said to have apprehended the three persons, who were initially reported to be unarmed at the time of their arrest.
The sources further alleged that the individuals were later found dead under circumstances that raised concerns among security stakeholders in the area.
It was also gathered that the vigilantes subsequently presented a locally fabricated AK-47 rifle and a motorcycle, which they claimed were recovered from the suspects.
However, preliminary assessments reportedly indicated inconsistencies, as earlier accounts suggested that no weapons were recovered during the initial encounter.
The development has triggered concerns over possible extrajudicial action and alleged attempts to justify the incident after the fact.
Security authorities are expected to review the incident for further clarification and necessary action.
Efforts to ensure adherence to lawful arrest procedures and proper handover of suspects have been reiterated in ongoing security engagements across the area. (Text: Zagazola, but headline reworked)
