Four persons have died after a Golf Wagon vehicle plunged into Tomas Dam in Dambatta Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident occurred, when the vehicle travelling from Kano to Roni in neighbouring Jigawa State, reportedly crashed into the dam following a burst tyre.
A statement issued by the spokesman of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, disclosed this on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the Danbatta Fire Service branch received an emergency call at about 7:10pm from a resident identified as Suleman, reporting the accident.
“The vehicle, a Golf Wagon with unknown registration number, crashed at Tomas Dam in Dambatta Local Government Area. The incident involved 10 persons,” the statement said.
It added that personnel from the Danbatta Fire Station responded promptly and rescued all the occupants from the submerged vehicle.
The fire service said four of the victims were rescued unconscious but were later confirmed dead at the hospital.
The deceased were identified as Shamsiya Miko, aged about 35, and Fatima Danlami, aged about 40, while the identities of two other victims were yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
“All victims were conveyed to Danbatta General Hospital for medical attention and necessary procedures,” the statement added.
The agency said preliminary investigation showed that the accident was caused by a burst tyre.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, appealed to motorists to drive carefully and responsibly to avoid accidents.
He also urged relevant authorities to urgently repair the Tomas Dam embankment to protect lives and property. (Daily Trust)
